“So Love was crown'd, but Music won the cause.

Timotheus, to his breathing flute
And sounding lyre
Could swell the soul to rage, or kindle soft desire.”
The above verses from John Dryden’s "Alexander's Feast, or the Power of Music", gives a picture of the feast given by Greek ruler, Alexander the Great, after he defeated the ruler of Persia, Darius. The feast was hosted at Persepolis, the Persian Capital.
In the proceedings of the feast,
a musician Timotheus performed and is believed to have manipulated Alexander’s
emotions – from glorifying Alexander, encouraging the king to drink, changing
the tone to melancholy for the death of Darius, praising Alexander’s love
Thais, to evoking emotions of revenge that made the king and his love to set
the Persian palace on fire. Timotheus did this all with only one tool – music
which stirred various emotions of pride, love, gloom, fierceness, all of which avenged
for all the Persia's previous demolition activities against Greece. That’s the
power of music!
